Some assembly required.

7 min read11 sources

Reporting windowOctober 27, 2026 evening (America/Chicago). Sources published October 26–27; images retrieved October 28 UTC. Election projections remain provisional at assembly.

The day in brief

Good evening. Israel’s exit polls have arrived without a ready-made government attached. Coalition bargaining remains an excellent way to discover that winning an argument and having enough seats are separate activities. In Brazil, Reuters reports Bolsonaro has left for the US after a passport-surrender order. His precise whereabouts remain unclear.

Around Oleshky, a local pause offers civilians the prospect of food, medicine and safer movement. That matters. It does not stop the wider war, and a promised corridor still needs people and supplies to pass through it. Sudan’s hunger emergency demands the same practical attention: access, protection and funding.

Serbia’s student-backed election breakthrough is receiving congratulations abroad while its domestic work begins. Switzerland is preparing to open a diplomatic office in Pyongyang. The newsroom has also appointed a dog Minister for Cheese, an office whose responsibilities are unusually well defined.

The stories that actually matter

Israel’s exit polls point toward more coalition bargaining

Developing

The exit polls have supplied estimates. Anyone selling a finished government may wish to check the contents of the box.

A narrow projected edge

Initial exit polls put the opposition slightly ahead of Netanyahu’s camp, short of an outright majority.

The majority still matters

The Knesset has 120 seats; neither a narrow polling lead nor being the largest camp guarantees control.

Estimates are not results

These are exit-poll projections, subject to the count. This edition does not declare a winner.

Bolsonaro leaves Brazil; US official says family will receive visas

Developing

Monday’s intention to remain in Brazil has encountered Tuesday’s reported departure. The opposition appears to be developing an international branch.

Departure reported by sources

Reuters reports Bolsonaro left for the United States; a senior State Department official said visas would be issued to his family.

A passport deadline was outstanding

He had been ordered to surrender passports during a money-laundering investigation. Reuters says the passports were canceled after the deadline.

Allegations and location need care

Bolsonaro denies wrongdoing. His precise whereabouts and how he departed remained unclear in the report.

A local ceasefire begins around Oleshky; the wider war continues

Developing

Residents need food, medicine and a safe way out. The test is what reaches them, not the size of the announcement.

A limited pause begins

Russia and Ukraine confirmed a ceasefire around occupied Oleshky on Tuesday. Ukraine’s ombudsman reported no violations by evening.

Aid and evacuation are the purpose

Food and medicine are running dangerously low. Negotiators described supplies and medical assistance preceding evacuation corridors.

The rest of Ukraine is not covered

Russian attacks elsewhere continued. A local truce does not establish a national ceasefire or completed evacuations.

Countries urge Sudan’s warring parties to open aid routes

Developing

People cannot eat a joint statement. Governments calling for access must also fund the work that access makes possible.

Famine risk demands action

Dozens of countries warned of deteriorating food security and urged the parties to remove impediments to humanitarian assistance.

Food needs a route and funding

The statement called for more funding and authorization of cross-line and cross-border operations, including air access to Darfur.

Appeals do not establish access

The diplomatic appeal is not evidence that routes have opened or supplies have reached everyone who needs them.

US senators welcome Serbia’s student-backed election breakthrough

Developing

A student movement earns congratulations from Washington. The much less photogenic assignment of governing remains at home.

A bipartisan welcome

Five US senators congratulated Serbia’s Student List and welcomed the ruling party’s acceptance of the October 25 parliamentary result.

Observers receive recognition

The senators highlighted domestic and international observers and described a projected decisive parliamentary majority.

Projection and implementation differ

The statement concerns the parliamentary result. It does not establish a completed cabinet or delivery of the movement’s policy agenda.

Switzerland prepares to reopen a diplomatic door in Pyongyang

Developing

A working diplomatic office is a modest achievement worth having. The ribbon should resist applying for the Nobel Peace Prize.

Cassis plans two days in Pyongyang

Swiss Foreign Minister Ignazio Cassis is scheduled to visit Thursday and Friday for an office-opening ceremony and talks.

Talks have a concrete agenda

Officials are expected to discuss bilateral consultations, Korean Peninsula security and wider geopolitical issues, before Cassis travels to Seoul.

A visit is still ahead

The October 29–30 meetings are planned, not completed. No agreement is announced by this report.

Before we go

One last strange thing

New York’s dogs have acquired costume departments

A photo roundup published Tuesday shows New York’s Halloween dog-parade costumes, including a pug inside a wheel of cheese and a dog staging a miniature halftime show. We respect the commitment. The cheese dog appears to have secured the only cabinet position in this edition that comes with a clear portfolio: cheese. Our graphics desk has added a crown, thereby contributing almost nothing to an already excellent situation. Good dogs. Deeply unnecessary production budgets.
