Reporting windowOctober 26 evening update (America/Chicago), expanding the earlier October 26 election briefing with reporting published October 25–26. PublishedAt retains the first release; updatedAt records this revision.

The day in brief

Good evening. Belgrade has a victory to celebrate and a government to assemble. Serbia’s student-backed movement now faces the unglamorous work of appointments and public services. We wish it competence. The graphics desk has requested the keys in pink marker, which is the limit of its contribution.

In Brazil, Bolsonaro’s party recognizes Lula’s win while its candidate rejects it. Arithmetic has entered the awkward family-conversation phase. The passport request is a separate development, with its basis still attributed to Bolsonaro’s account.

Elsewhere, Ukraine says vital interceptors await an American signature. Egypt has authorized support for Saudi Arabia without publicly settling the mission’s form. Israel votes Tuesday, with accountability and coalition arithmetic both ahead. The useful distinction tonight is between permission, promises and something actually happening. People under attack cannot shelter beneath an announcement.

The stories that actually matter

Belgrade celebrates; Serbia’s winners must now assemble a government

Developing

The students have won the election. The next assignment involves running the country, with considerably less scope for requesting an extension.

Majority reported

Reuters reports 139 of 250 seats for student-backed candidates with almost 99% counted, citing the election commission.

Appointments matter

The movement’s anti-corruption and education agenda now needs people able to implement it.

Cabinet not settled

The prime minister and other key appointments remained unclear in Monday’s reporting.

Bolsonaro’s party recognizes Lula’s win despite his rejection

Developing

The party has recognized the result. Its candidate has not conceded. An unusually public disagreement over whether arithmetic requires party discipline.

Party accepts the outcome

The Liberal Party acknowledged Lula’s runoff victory on Monday; Flávio Bolsonaro had sought annulment.

Large gap, small extension

Reuters cites analysis finding fewer than 35,000 votes during the extension, against a victory margin exceeding four million.

Challenge remains a process

Recognition by the party does not itself resolve any legal filing.

Zelenskiy says air-defence missiles await US sign-off

Official claim

Ukraine needs interceptors while Russia attacks infrastructure. A delay in approval has consequences beyond the office where the paperwork sits.

Excellent. Perhaps the form can intercept something.

Approval still awaited

Zelenskiy says Ukraine has waited nearly a month for US approval of Patriot and NASAMS missile supplies.

Winter approaches

Air defence protects people and essential infrastructure during Russian attacks.

Explanation contested

Rubio acknowledged a possible delivery delay last week but denied political motives.

Egypt authorizes military support for Saudi Arabia

Developing

Parliament has approved broad powers for a mission whose public details remain narrow. The authorization has arrived before the itinerary.

Parliament gives approval

Egypt authorized Sisi to take necessary measures to support Saudi defence against escalating Houthi attacks.

Regional stakes widen

Closer Egyptian involvement could widen the conflict; Red Sea access also matters to Egypt.

Deployment not established

No formal Saudi troop request was announced; the support’s form remained unspecified.

Israel prepares to vote in a test of Netanyahu’s leadership

Developing

Tuesday’s ballot tests Netanyahu’s record. A close result could leave the next government to coalition bargaining rather than election-night certainty.

Vote on Tuesday

Israel votes October 27 in its first national election since the October 7, 2023 attack.

Accountability is central

Netanyahu’s opponents demand accountability for the security failures; the wars and their consequences shape the contest.

Coalition arithmetic awaits

Polls suggest a tight contest. They do not establish the result or the next governing coalition.

Before we go

One last strange thing

A cybersecurity engineer gives pumpkins more personality than our drawings

AP’s October 26 profile introduces Mike Valladao, a cybersecurity systems engineer who becomes Farmer Mike and carves elaborate pumpkin faces. He has been doing it for more than four decades. Our graphics desk has responded by crowning his pumpkin and adding a horse whose anatomy remains under review. We congratulate him on making something both skilled and temporary. The newsroom generally achieves the temporary part first. His pumpkins are art; our horse has requested a second opinion.

A crown for the pumpkin. A horse for absolutely no fucking reason.
