The curfew lasts as long as necessary. How long is that?

The day in brief

Good evening. Paris and Lyon have imposed fresh curfews, with some restrictions to last as long as necessary. Thank you for the precision. Residents will presumably recognize the end date when it happens to them. The questions are who makes that decision, what evidence informs it, and how the restrictions affect people going about lawful business.

CNN is meanwhile challenging its continued exclusion from presidential travel coverage after obtaining an injunction against a broader ban. We will follow compliance as closely as the announcement of compliance. Ukraine says missile early warnings have resumed, giving people more time to seek shelter; the interruption still needs explaining. Britain is sending defensive jets to Saudi Arabia. Yellowstone has announced a $105 million private fund. That is welcome money for useful work. We can acknowledge the gift and still ask to see the completed repairs.

The stories that actually matter

Zelenskyy says missile early warnings have resumed

Developing

Resumed missile warnings give people time to seek shelter. Kyiv and Washington’s differing accounts of the interruption still need reconciling.

Warnings resume

Zelenskyy said allied missile early warnings resumed after talks including a call with Marco Rubio.

Time to respond

Advance notice helps civilians seek shelter and defenses react.

Accounts differ

Rubio denied a change in US policy. The cause of the interruption remains unresolved.

Britain sends jets to defend Saudi Arabia

Developing

Britain calls the deployment defensive. An excellent adjective. We would also like a duration, a limit and an exit.

RAF deployment

Britain said it would send Typhoon jets for defensive operations against Houthi attacks on Saudi Arabia.

Wider involvement

The deployment adds military commitments and exposure.

Mission boundaries

Duration and escalation risks require continued scrutiny.

Paris and Lyon impose new curfews

Developing

Some restrictions will last as long as necessary. Residents can make plans around that wonderfully considerate unit of time.

Restricted zones

Paris and Lyon imposed fresh city-center curfews after unrest.

Movement restricted

Residents and lawful demonstrators are affected alongside people committing violence.

Duration unclear

Police said some restrictions would remain as long as necessary.

CNN challenges continued exclusion from Air Force One

Developing

CNN obtained an injunction against a broader ban, but says travel exclusion continues. The court order has apparently failed to check in online.

Pool access dispute

CNN threatened further legal action over exclusion from presidential travel-pool coverage after obtaining an injunction against a broader ban.

Public scrutiny

Pool reporters document events on behalf of a wider press corps.

Court scope matters

The injunction and access to specific spaces require separate analysis.

Yellowstone announces a $105 million private fund

The $105 million fund is welcome. We regret to report that accepting a large cheque does not cause the remaining repairs to evaporate.

Record gift

Yellowstone and Tallgrass announced a $105 million fund for conservation, infrastructure and access.

Maintenance scale

The gift supports projects but does not erase the park’s wider repair needs.

Delivery test

Funding commitments must become completed work.

Before we go

One last strange thing

A new national park. Rangers sold separately.

Chiricahua became the country’s 64th national park on Tuesday. Its Arizona rock spires were already protected as a national monument, AP reported, and the redesignation arrives amid Park Service workforce cuts. The landscape has acquired a more prestigious title. The staff still need enough colleagues to look after it and welcome visitors. We congratulate the rocks on their promotion. Any suggestion that they can now cover a shift at the visitor center comes exclusively from our graphics department.

Good night. The curfew’s end date will be announced when it is no longer necessary to ask.
