The day in brief

Good evening. Congress objects to the Russia sanctions waiver. Readers joining us today: Trump put the sanctions he signed on hold; lawmakers from both parties now disapprove. Congress is in recess, however, and an immediate legislative counter has not materialized. The switch from Friday is still off. It has received several stern looks.

Across Europe, protests are drawing attention to housing costs and public services. Different countries have different grievances; one convenient theory will not explain them all. WFP reports funding shortages have cut assistance for 700,000 Palestinians in Gaza and the West Bank. Those are people losing help with basic necessities. In Australia, Helen Haines is critically injured after an apparent deliberate car attack. Investigators have not established a motive. We will leave that space open rather than fill it with a panel.

The stories that actually matter

European protests widen around living costs and services

Developing

Housing costs and public services feature among the grievances. Examining those conditions seems a useful accompaniment to examining the crowds.

Before we go

One last strange thing

The rankings encounter the football

Five of the top seven teams in the AP college football rankings lost on Saturday, the first such regular-season Saturday on record, AP reported. Georgia, Notre Dame and Indiana were among them. We thank the rankings for arranging the teams so neatly before the teams began moving. There is a reassuring honesty to sport: eventually somebody plays the game, and the confident assessment has to meet the scoreboard. Our graphics desk’s prediction sheet is now a paper airplane.
