The sanctions have an off switch. He found it.

The day in brief

Good evening. Trump has put the Russia sanctions he signed on hold, citing the national interest. An accommodating arrangement: the law can demonstrate resolve while the pause prevents it becoming a nuisance. We have asked the graphics desk to draw the switch. It has asked whether the switch requires sanctions.

Elsewhere, the consequences are less accommodating. Russian strikes have left Ukrainian households without power. Settler attacks are disrupting the West Bank olive harvest. In France, mass arrests and investigations into police conduct demand answers about how school protests were handled. Those answers need findings and identifiable decisions; another declaration of commitment will not do the work. On the financial pages, Kevin Warsh declined to promise the Fed’s next rate moves. Someone has left room for information. We intend to encourage this.

The stories that actually matter

French protest policing faces widening scrutiny

Developing

School protests brought mass arrests and investigations into police conduct. Explaining how that happened will require more than saying order matters.

Before we go

One last strange thing

The press secretary barely gets unpacked

Katie Zacharia is leaving the White House press secretary role after five days, following scrutiny of her credentials and a difficult first briefing, AP reported Friday. Five days is an unusually compact period in which to arrive, become the spokesperson and require a new spokesperson. We hope nobody ordered the business cards in bulk. The administration must now fill the role again. Our newsroom has offered its ceremonial pen as a reference. It is also available to wave at difficult questions.
