The day in brief

Good evening. A plan for pharmacy-made peptides has reached the White House for review. This is progress through an administration, a journey sometimes confused with progress through a clinical trial. We congratulate the paperwork and await the evidence. In Britain, Sally Rooney’s publisher has withdrawn her novels from distribution over her financial support for a banned group. Booksellers now get to explain the distinction between a withdrawn book and an illegal one. A restful afternoon in retail.

Ukraine has resumed strikes on Russian energy targets after saying Moscow ignored a brief truce. Civilian power supplies remain exposed as winter approaches. Saudi authorities report intercepting a missile over Medina; responsibility remains unresolved. And Washington has dropped the proposed execution livestream. We are relieved that somebody eventually asked why the fucking camera was there.

The stories that actually matter

Ukraine resumes attacks on Russian energy targets

Developing

The energy truce has reached the stage where one side says the other ignored it. Households still need the lights on.

Refinery hit

Ukraine struck a refinery in Russia’s Ryazan region after saying Moscow had ignored a brief energy-target truce.

Winter exposure

An unenforced pause leaves civilian energy systems exposed.

Terms in dispute

The competing accounts do not establish a mutually observed agreement.

HHS advances a plan for pharmacy-made peptides

The peptide plan has reached the White House. An excellent destination for paperwork; a less conventional substitute for a clinical trial.

Review, not approval

HHS sent an interim peptide-access policy to the White House for review, AP reported.

Access and evidence

Expanding supply raises questions about the evidence behind promoted uses.

Details pending

A submitted policy is not a final rule or proof of safety.

Trump drops the proposed execution livestream

The execution will no longer be livestreamed. A welcome concession from a government that had somehow reached the camera-placement stage.

Broadcast reversed

Trump said the execution of Fort Hood shooter Nidal Hasan would not be livestreamed after bipartisan criticism.

State power on camera

The reversal concerns public spectacle as well as punishment.

Scope of reversal

Ending the broadcast proposal does not settle the underlying execution process.

Saudi coalition reports interception over Medina

Official claim

Saudi authorities report stopping a missile. Who launched it remains unresolved; the interception claim cannot answer both questions.

Coalition account

The Saudi-led coalition reported destroying a cruise missile over Medina province without assigning responsibility.

Regional exposure

The episode shows how far the regional conflict can reach.

Attribution unresolved

The Houthis denied responsibility. The launch account remains disputed.

Rooney’s publisher withdraws her books from UK distribution

Rooney’s publisher has withdrawn her novels over her support for a banned group. The humble bookshop now offers a complimentary legal headache.

Publisher withdraws

Sally Rooney’s British publisher stopped distribution because she financially supports the banned group Palestine Action.

Expression meets enforcement

Readers and booksellers face consequences from restrictions on financial support.

Keep the distinction

The novels themselves have not thereby been proved illegal to read.

Before we go

One last strange thing

Democracy, with commemorative parchment

The King and Queen attended the opening of the Seventh Senedd in Cardiff, where the King addressed members and signed a commemorative parchment, according to the Court Circular. The elected legislature was supplied with a hereditary guest and a special document to remember him by. A photograph would apparently have been insufficiently constitutional. To be clear, this was commemorative signing, not the enactment of legislation. Our graphics desk has nevertheless requested a ceremonial pen. Its current one is on probation.
